Sci-Fi Action In The Outback With Carey Mulligan And Gary Ross
It could soon be time for the people of Australia to put Carey Mulligan‘s face on their bank notes. Not only will she spending the summer in the country, shooting The Great Gatsby with Baz Luhrmann, she’s setting up a second gig, a film called Outback, not surprisingly set in the outback.
I hope they don’t get to keep our Carey – she’s not exactly a fair swap for Kylie Minogue, not even if you were to toss in Dannii and half a pound of Rolf Harris.
The concept for Outback comes from screenwriter Nissar Modi, who has recently adapted Robert C. O’Brien’s Z for Zachariah into a screenplay, and Gary Ross, who is also attached to direct. This could be Ross’ second consecutive sci-fi action film after the in-production Hunger Games.
If I know Ross (and I don’t, but I know his films, and love them) there’s some nifty political or social motivation behind Outback, as well as a great narrative hook or two. It’s just that nobody wants to tell us about any of it yet…
Variety note that Tobey Maguire is producing along with Ross, as well as Graham King and his GK Films partner Tim Headington.
