American Gods TV Series To Draw On The Book We Already Have, And The One Neil Gaiman Has Yet To Write

Producer Gary Goetzman has revealed that, all being well, the HBO version of Neil Gaiman‘s American Gods will run to six seasons of ten to twelve episodes each. On Bleeding Cool’s story about this at the weekend, a couple of Little Bleeders speculated as to how a single novel will fill sixty or seventy hours of TV.

The answer? It won’t.

Gaiman himself tweeted the following:

And for those asking, No, 6 years of AMERICAN GODS on TV doesn’t mean just the 1st book. It means I need to write the 2nd now, for a start.

And a third? A fourth? How many hours of TV is a novel “worth”, anyhow?

It’s also been pointed out, quite rightly, that there’s also scope for expanding some rapidly passing sentences in the first American Gods novel to full, visualised dramatic situations. Whole episodes could spring up between lines.

The show is expected to air in 2013. There’s a long time for some answers to surface.
