Production has started on the thriller, Twenty8k. There’s some pedigree here, particularly as Paul Abbott is listed as a co-writer. He’s the guy who created Shameless and wrote the original BBC version of State of Play. I think Rich would probably kiss him if he ever met him.
The film’s other writer is one Jimmy Dowdall, a “writer in residence” at Mr. Abbott’s AbbottVision production company. The directors are David Kew and Neil Thompson, and it’s the latter of these who had the original idea for the film in the first place.
Here’s some explanation of that idea, or at least how it is first presented, direct from the film’s press reps:
Parminder Nagra (Bend It Like Beckham, ER) is Deeva Jani, a successful British-born, Paris-based fashion executive who is forced to return home to the UK when she receives the shocking news that her teenage brother Vipon, played by newcomer Sebastian Nanena, has been arrested for a fatal gang shooting in London. As she and her family are vilified and the dead boy’s violent family threaten retribution against her brother in jail, Deeva turns detective in an attempt to uncover the truth, prove her brother’s innocence and save his life.
Teaming up with youth worker and ex-gang member, Clint, played by Jonas Armstrong (Robin Hood), Deeva soon finds herself up against powerful and unexpected adversaries including the corrupt but highly connected DCI Stone, played by Tony Award-winner Stephen Dillane (The Hours, SpyGame, Welcome to Sarajevo). As events unfold a deeper conspiracy is unlocked involving absolute corruption, media manipulation, a sex scandal, murder and power struggles way beyond London’s street gangs and all the way to the seat of government.
The same press release informs us that shooting has just started in London and at 3 Mills Studios. I’m looking at the first image, however – that’s it at the head of the post – and all I’m seeing is Paris. I guess they did some second unit stuff ahead of principal photography kicking off?
The supporting cast will include Kaya Scodelario, Nichola Burley, Greg Chillin, Michael Socha and Kierston Wareing. Not a bad lineup, really.
And, finally, here’s the official logo for the film, which also gives a hint or two, just through its design and typeface. Intriguing.
