Song Of The South To Go Unsung, Pixar Greats To Go Without Sequels

CEO Bob Iger today chaired a Disney shareholders meeting and while I don’t have all of the details yet, Bleeding Cool has been sent a few partial accounts of what went down, with more to follow.

It seems to be an annual occurrence that somebody asks Iger about The Song of the South, the long-shelved Disney pic accused in some quarters of being racist because it portrays a happy slave* getting along all fine and dandy with his master. And, yes, this is a year with a nine or a two in it, so Iger has had to field another enquiry on the same. His response? That it wouldn’t be “right” to use “studio resources” to release the film.

Hmmm. So it’s better to hide it and, if you’d excuse the term, splash a little white wash on the history of Disney, at the same time as keeping a very interesting movie, and one that’s arguably not racist at all, perhaps only rather naive, out of the public’s reach? I’m not sure I agree with that.

Meanwhile, Iger also identified something else that we won’t be seeing anytime soon: The Incredibles 2. Or Finding Nemo 2. Or Rata2ouille. According to Iger, while Pixar have several films in development for after Monsters Inc. 2, none of them are sequels.

So, it’s a good news, bad news kind of day, rough coming with the smooth.

*Okay, forum folk, “former slave”. I should have been more clear in the first place.
