Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch is in UK cinemas from April 1 (which gives the US a one week lead on us, grumble grumble). While we’re keenly waiting, I thought we’d have a tie-in competion.
For the rather exciting prize we’ve got a one-of-a-kind, money-can’t-but lithograph of Sucker Punch concept art by Joel Chang, signed by director Zack Snyder, and portions of fame, glory and publicity. All of these things are coveted by creatives and artistic geniuses, such people as yourselves.
And we’ll be awarding all of the above to our first place winner.
Here’s the prize lithograph, hanging out at WB:

This winner will be the person who does the best Sucker Punch homage illustration as judged by Frazer Irving, the Batman and Robin, Button Man and 2000AD genius. The best of the best will get a good airing on the official Sucker Punch facebook page too.
So, if you ever wanted to show off your skills to Frazer Irving, this is your chance.
If you believe that you don’t have any artistic skill, first of all, I don’t believe you and secondly, you might find the Sucker Punch trailer painter makes it easy enough that you can make something imaginative and striking anyway.
The trailer painter, in short, enables you to select a frame from a specially provided Sucker Punch trailer and layer your art on the top of it using a range of different tools. I was told that tracing was cheating as a kid – but then I got into Ralph Bakshi and Bob Sabiston and rotoscoping was no longer a dirty word.
If you don’t want to use the trailer painter and would prefer to use your own pencils, pens, software, chunky crayons or chalk, then be our guest. All I ask is that you make your image into a nice quality jpg, png or tiff and e-mail it over to me with the subject line “I Love You Baby Doll” and including back-up contact details beyond the e-mail address used.
The closing date is April 15th.
Here are our top tips on creating a winner:
- Make sure your image is related to Sucker Punch. Look at the many stories we’ve published on the film before for inspiration, or its official site.
- Have your own style. The film blends a whole spread of different looks and textures and tones, so one more won’t hurt. Indeed, it’s what Snyder would want.
- Don’t just try to do a Frazer Irving knock-off to try and trick him into liking you more.
- Imagination and creativity will always punch harder than empty polish and going through the motions.
- Do believe in the Lana Turner/Top Hat Cafe myth. Your art being showcased here could see you being discovered and taking another step on the road to a giant mansion made of gold. Maybe.

SUCKER PUNCH, in cinemas Friday, 1st April, is an epic action fantasy that takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what is imaginary.
She has been locked away against her will, but Babydoll (Emily Browning) has not lost her will to survive. Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girls—the outspoken Rocket (Jena Malone), the street-smart Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), the fiercely loyal Amber (Jamie Chung) and the reluctant Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish)—to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino) and the High Roller (Jon Hamm).
Led by Babydoll, the girls engage in fantastical warfare against everything from samurais to serpents, with a virtual arsenal at their disposal. Together, they must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stay alive. But with the help of a Wise Man (Scott Glenn), their unbelievable journey—if they succeed—will set them free.
