Javier Bardem Gets The Role Of Roland In The Dark Tower, Has His Kiss With Josh Brolin Cut From The Oscars Telecast

When it comes to The Dark Tower movies and TV series, Javier Bardem was always one of Ron Howard’s top-two contenders for the role of Rolan Deschain. Now, it finally looks like he’s going to land the gig, as according to producer Brian Grazer, the actor is “locked in psychologically.”

So, if it goes wrong now, it’s down to contract details… or glitchy psychology. Grazer delivered this quote to MTV after The Oscars. He decided to test the casting out against MTV’s tastes:

We’re in the process of trying to put that together. Will that make you happy? Will that make MTV happy?

The collective voice of MTV said “Very happy!” – but what about the collective voice of Bleeding Cool. Altogether now on 1… 2… 3…

Meanwhile, Bardem’s appearance at The Oscars appears to have fallen foul of censorship. Perhaps. After Elton have described how, while the ABC telecast lingered on a shot of Penelope Cruz, the audience at the Kodak theatre got to see Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem dance, and kiss.

Here’s a picture from The Telegraph.

While ABC declined to provide After Elton with a comment, Oscars producer Bruce Cohen said the following:

It [the dance and the kiss] was unscripted, and the plan in the truck was always to cut to Penelope in the audience applauding Josh’s and Javier’s introduction, so that is what happened, just as they were starting to dance. Josh and Javier’s moment (I saw them start to dance, but, to be honest, I have no idea if they kissed — that’s the first I’ve heard of that) would have made a great TV moment, but since no one knew it was coming, we cut to the gorgeous Mz. Cruz as planned. By the time we cut back from her close-up, James and Javier were walking to the podium.

And I guess the plausibility of that statement hangs on how conspicuous you’d find a long, lingering shot of Penelope Cruz. I didn’t think it went on too long, but I’m not a gay man and was very possibly hypnotised.
