Kevin Costner Probably In New Superman, But As Which Character?

I can’t imagine Kevin Costner would turn the role down, so when Deadline say there’s “heightened interest” in him taking on an unspecified part in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot, I’m happy to read it as an all-but-done deal.

But they don’t know who he’d be playing, which makes it time for another guessing game. Film blogging is far too full of this.

The three most obvious contenders would be Pa Kent, Perry White and General Zod. Jonathan Kent has that whole Field of Dreams thing going on, so I can see that match easily; Perry White maybe sits more comfortably with Costner’s roles in JFK and Thirteen Days; and Zod just doesn’t seem to work at all.

Or, of course, there’s also a chance he’d be playing new character, created just for the screenplay. He’d be a pretty acceptable movieland POTUS, for example.

If I were a gambling man (though I’m not really, not even in Oscar week, as we are) then I’d plump for Pa Kent.

I’m just glad he’s not directing the film. He’d probably cast himself as Superman and sing a song about how great he is over the end credits.
