John Sayles Scripting Carole King, Joni Mitchell And Carly Simon Picture, Girls Like Us

Back on August 2nd I reported:

The last time I wrote about Girls Like Us - which was a long time ago in a blog far, far away –House producer Katie Jacobs was developing the project with an eye to direct. It will be an adaptation of Sheila Weller’s gossipy page turner that breathlessly tells of three young women growing up and becoming some of the most interesting, if not influential, singers and songwriters of the 1960s: Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon.

My absolute favourite album of all time is King’s Tapestry, and I’m pretty big on Mitchell and Simon too. I feel rather invested in this one, and I’d hate to see it go wrong. I know I’m going to love the soundtrack, but I’d want more from this to really grab me than the music.

And that pretty much all still stands. The new news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, who tell us that Jacobs’ film has found its screenwriter:

John Sayles, the Oscar-nominated writer of Passion Fish and Lone Star, has been hired by Sony to adapt Girls Like Us… Sayles’ 2007 film Honeydripper took place in the music world, and he directed some iconic videos for Bruce Springsteen in the 1980s–Born in the U.S.A. among them. He also lived through the period and was a big fan of the book.

Perfect. I love the music, I love Sayles, and I love House.

I said it before, and I’ll say it again – I can’t imagine this film will get to screen without the producers auditioning Lea Michelle for the role of Carole King (or, maybe, at a push, Carly Simon). Stay tuned for the casting news as it comes in.
