Will 2012 Be The Year Of James Bond? And Will It Close With The Next Installment?
I can’t see official MGM announcements being our best source of James Bond info for sometime yet. As they line up their finances and try to get their little green-backed ducks in a row, there’s bound to be a lot of movement behind the scenes that we’ll only be finding out about through leaks and snoop reports.
As such, I’d expect that some elements of a new Variety report on the studio are skipping over details of the current situation. They say “Sam Mendes has long been rumored to be the leading candidate to helm” the next Bond but it seems fair to say, on basis of all available evidence, that he’s all but signed, and is already making plans, both for and around the job.
To my eye, here’s the most interesting new info in Variety’s story:
MGM has been working up plans for a 2012 yearlong commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the first Bond pic, 1962′s Doctor No, so the studio will probably move as quickly as possible to lock down Craig…
If this means nicely remastered, cinematic reissues of the entire series, then I’m in. I’ve only ever seen a handful of Bond films on the big screen – eight, I think – and while there’s also only a handful of pictures in the series worth a great deal of excitement, those two lists unfortunately wouldn’t have much crossover.
There’s a lot that could be done to celebrate Bond, but I think the best thing would be a new film, and a good new film at that. I really loved Casino Royale, really didn’t love Quantum of Solace, but agree that getting Daniel Craig back is near-essential. Here’s hoping his Girl With A… schedules will allow for some full-on Bonding in good time.
