Joss Whedon Was Offered Control Of The Buffy Reboot
Okay, so “if you want a job doing properly, then do it yourself”, but what if you don’t want the job to get done at all?
According to Heat Vision, original creator Joss Whedon was offered the driver’s seat when Fran Rubel and Kaz Kazui decided to press ahead with a Buffy reboot. He declined, and has since engaged with writing and directing The Avengers, but I would imagine his decision to pass on Buffy was not simply because he had a “better offer”.
Whedon has already reinvented and restarted the franchise once, when moving on from the rather dented and bruised first vampire slayer movie to bringing Buffy on to the box. This was when he liberated himself and his vampire slayer from the influence of the Kazuis and I can’t imagine he’d want to reboot himself right back into their grasp again. But I think the Kazuis did the right thing by approaching Whedon, and I hope they had made him a respectable offer, both in terms of control and financial compensation.
For some fans, the dream of seeing Whedon’s Buffyverse 2.0 back on screen again has not died out entirely. There has been much talk of some spin-off series or another, from a toon, to vehicles for supporting characters Faith, Giles and Spike. Perhaps this dream played some part in discouraging Whedon from engaging with another reboot? Surely a new Buffy rolling in to town, succeed or fail, would close the book on the Buffy we knew best and loved most.
So, Whedon is out but Whit Anderson is currently scripting the new Buffy, derived from the elements of the character that the Kazuis have the rights to. This would be, essentially, anything from the initial movie.
Producer Charles Roven at least wants us to believe that he’s impressed by Anderson’s angle. I’ve got my fingers crossed, while many of my peers have crosses burning.
