Mark Wahlberg To Play Nathan Drake In The Uncharted Movie, De Niro And Pesci In The Frame Too

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune is to be the fourth collaboration between actor Mark Wahlberg and director David O. Russell after Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees and The Fighter. And, while we’re counting, I’m prepared to bet it will be the first video game movie to really be worth bothering with.

Wahlberg revealed his casting to MTV, and also took the opportunity to talk up the film and his collaborators somewhat:

David is one of the best writer-directors I’ve ever worked with. The idea that he has is just insane. So hopefully we’ll be making that movie this summer. I’m obviously in whatever David wants to do, but the idea of it is so off the charts: De Niro being my father, Pesci being my uncle. It’s not going to be the watered-down version, that’s for sure.

Right – because De Niro and Pesci are never in anything “watered-down”.*

What’s exciting here, for me, are the intimations that Russell is making a film of his own design, spiralling out of the basic premise behind the videogame. As far as I’m aware, there’s no father, no uncle and no “insane” ideas in the game. It’s exciting to see the post-Indiana Jones adventure film get such interesting talent attached.

Wahlberg says that, hopefully, they’ll be shooting in the summer.

*And that water is never, ever piss. Of course not.
