Scarlett Johansson, says today’s rumour, was Baz Luhrmann’s pick to play Daisy Buchanan in his adaptation of The Great Gatsby but she chose instead to sign on for Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo. That deal, say Vulture, has left Carey Mulligan as the top card on the Gatsby pack.
But where’s Rebecca Hall these days? Shuffled somewhere into the middle?
We don’t know yet if Mulligan is going to sign on or if Luhrmann will be sent deeper into his wish list, but there’s an interesting sidebar to this story: if Johansson will be busy with Zoo when Gatsby gets rolling, then it seems that Luhrmann must be getting ever closer to production. Vulture can’t be any more specific than provide a shoot time of “summer” but I can’t see We Bought a Zoo, which kicks off in January taking up Johansson’s time until, say, June.
