Peter Parker’s Parents To Appear In New Spider-Movie?

We’ve known for a while that the next Spider-Man movie would feature some flashback scenes with a younger Peter Parker, but some new and changed details appear to have come to light. If the report at What’s Playing is to be believed, the film’s producers are now seeking a 6-9 year mini-me version of Andrew Garfield in order to enact a scene that will feature Peter’s parents.

(Previously, the young Parker was to be aged under 6, and now a minimum of 6 has been set. I’d guess there’s little to be inferred from this.)

Now, according to Marvel continuity as I understand it, Peter’s parents Richard and Mary Parker were supposedly rather heroic in their own right, being agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and the C.I.A respectively. I doubt very much that this will impact upon their portrayal in the film, however.

The Parker parents were introduced in 1968′s Amazing Spider-Man Annual 5, a comic that has drawn any amount of fan derision over the years. I can’t help but wonder if introducing the characters into this movie might bring about a similar slating.

I understand that there were completely different characters created to be Peter’s parents in the Ultimate comics, but I don’t know anything much about those versions at all. All the same, even the most minot flashbacks with parent characters, and however they are portrayed, seems like a bit of risky business to me.

I hope Marc Webb and co. know what they are doing.
