VIDEO: The Sound Of Music, The Alien Anthology And More Demonstrate The Quality Of Blu-Ray

I’ve already waxed lyrical about the quality of the Alien and Aliens transfers on the Anthology Blu-rays, but Fox want you to see for yourselves. They know that what they have speaks for itself. Unfortunately, via the medium of Youtube, something is lost. Just a little…

But, still, this new featurette, talking up the quality of Blu-ray with demonstrations from a series of beautiful-looking new titles, makes a whole lot of sense. Especially if you’re a packaged media fan (like me) or enjoy the supplements and special features (like me), so that you’re not too keen on streaming and downloading. At least yet.

The Sound of Music is released on Blu-ray on 8th November courtesy of Fox. I was sent a full 1080p version of this demo clip, but unfortunately had no way of sharing it with you. Nonetheless, The Sound of Music really did look like an entirely new film.

I was lucky enough last year to preview some of Baz Luhrmann’s work on remastering Moulin Rouge and Rome + Juliet. The care he was taking in getting the colour balance, contrast and all-round image quality into perfect shape was immediately obvious. More so than the other films in this demonstration, they really came to life – more subtle and nuanced than the relatively simple, if pretty renditions that we’ve seen before.

There’s a quote in the clip that suggests watching a picture on Blu-ray is like being at the premiere. Trust me, I’ve been to enough premieres to know that the Blu-ray is usually better.
