Marvel Shelving Runaways Movie… For Now

Little bits of casting were being completed, and director Peter Sollett was busy working away, but Marvel have decided to let their big-screen adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s Runaways slip into a low gear and idle awhile. Production was set for March, but now it’s postponed, with no indication for when it might be rescheduled.

But why? Deadline offer a rumour then dispute it:

Word in agency circles is that the project was flat-lining because it’s similar in age demo to Kick-Ass, but insiders tell me that isn’t true. Marvel simply has too much going on at the moment.

Hmmm. I guess we’ve just learnt the limits of the mighty Marvel development slate.

Apparently, Peter Sollett will stay attached to the project – for now – but has been encouraged to find another film to make first. I think it’s safe to assume that the casting process will have to go back to square one.

Drew Pearce, author of the No Heroics TV show that Rich told you about, told you about and told you about again, was tapped to write the Runaways script. It’s not yet clear if Marvel studios will just freeze what he has, allow him to keep working on it or if another writer will be brought on.
