Which Comics Will The Superman Film Draw On? And What’s Wrong With The Screenplay?

Personally, I wasn’t surprised to read that David Goyer’s (first pass) script for the new Superman film is “rushed” and “a mess”, but the bad news doesn’t stop there. No. This story is going to get rather discouraging. But plow on.

Now, according to Vulture, Zack Snyder has been given the job of directing simply because he’s not the fussy kind and won’t spend a lot of money and time getting the script fixed up to a really high standard. So much for the positive influence of producer Chris Nolan, eh?

The idea is that Goyer’s rushed, messy screenplay could stand a good, hard redrafting but instead, Snyder’s been brought on to press ahead, make a Snyder film out of it and – of course – beat the ticking clock. Remember: Warner Bros. have until the end of 2011 to get their film into production or they’ll be facing some serious legal fallout.

When Vulture are through with spitting on Goyer and Snyder’s reputations, they do share some plot details for the film:

Clark Kent is a journalist traveling the world trying to decide if he should, in fact, even become Superman*.

Why – that’s Birthright, isn’t it? For two years, between 2004 and 2006, Mark Waid and Leinil Francis Yu’s series was the canonical origin story for the Man of Steel in comics. Sounds like it might be about to get the same honour for the big screen versions too.

*SPOILER: He decides that, yes, he should. Obviously.
