Todd McFarlane Spider-Man Cover Sells For $71,200

Recently a Frank Miller Daredevil cover went for over $100,000. Now a more recent McFarlane cover is heading into that ballpark. From Amazing Spider-Man 313, with the Lizard, appearing in the next Spider-Man movie. But this is not one of Todd's most high profile covers and one can only guess at how much something like the cover to Amazing Spider-Man 300 or 301 may go for.

As the auction was underway, Todd McFarlane tweeted;

HOW 2 MAKE MONEY: Sold a Spidey cover I did years ago for about $700. It's now on EBAY for over $55,000! Guess I should have asked $800.

The original buyer will probably have been Gareb Shamus, friend of Todd McFarlane (Todd drew the cover to Wizard #1) and and one point owned almost all of Todd's Amazing Spider-Man cover art. He bought it to help Todd be in the position to start Image Comics, and kept it piled in the corner of the Wizard office. The pile is likely worth over a million now, although Gareb sold most of it on a while back.

That could have been one very expensive spilled cup of coffee…

Ah, turns out this was one of the pieces not owned by Gareb – and that he actually hasn't sold any of them. You know, at this price, maybe he should…
