It’s James McAvoy Vs. Tom Cruise For Guillermo Del Toro’s Mountains Of Madness

Not to put too fine a point on it, here’s a story about a director wanting Tom Cruise for a lead role and the studio having other ideas. I don’t think I’d have been writing one of these six years ago, pre-couch and all.
Guillermo Del Toro is finally getting to press ahead with his film of At The Mountains of Madness, one of HP Lovecraft’s more notable works in a library of notable works. The lead role, of geologist William Dyer, is a good, juicy role and I’m sure loads of actors would bust a rib to get it. According to Collider, two contenders are Tom Cruise and James McAvoy.
The story takes a weird twist right at the top:
Sources have now told us that Universal wants James McAvoy to play the lead in the film, but del Toro wants Tom Cruise to star. Chris Pine’s name was also being tossed around, but his busy schedule may be too packed.
I think there’s space for both Cruise and McAvoy, actually, with one of them playing Dyer and the other as Danforth, another member of the same, insane expedition. The question there would be… which way round?
If Universal are sniffing at Cruise, I think they’re making a mistake. I simply can’t believe the public have soured on him so much that he can’t be the right choice if a director wants him. I certainly haven’t rejected films because Cruise is in them – I mean, I doubt we’d ever be best friends, but I think he’s a real movie star and very good at doing what movie stars do.
It’s been an age since Del Toro and his collaborators at Angry Films started the long, hard slog to get Mountains to the silver screen. I allowed myself to start getting excited three or four years ago, and by now I think I’m about to explode.
