Benedict Cumberbatch Wants To Be Doctor Who – Is It Already On The Cards?

Benedict Cumberbatch is caught being refreshingly candid in a new interview to promote Sherlock, the BBC series that will star him as the consulting detective of Baker Street and which I really rather liked, at least so far as the first episode took us. Here he is answering the question “Would you like to be in an episode of Dr. Who?”

Read that how you will. Some have suggested that an answer like that can only be rooted in some kind of confidence, perhaps a knowledge that one day, the starring role will be his.

On the other hand, he might be hinting that he’s going to be Moffat’s incarnation of The Master. It’s a stretch, but people are making it. My reading is simple: he’s being honest. You can’t play Sherlock Holmes then go back to supporting roles.

For now at least, I’m doing just swell with Matt Smith as Who, thank you very much. Cumberbatch to step in eventually? Well… if he could differentiate the character from Holmes sufficiently. I think there might be countless other surprising, exciting options that would come out of left field the way that Matt did.
