Tim Allen Signed On For ANOTHER Toy Story Film – What Does This Mean?

Sequel clauses are a regular fixture on movie contracts so I suppose this should really not be that much of a surprise, but Tim Allen has apparently already signed on for a fourth Toy Story picture. Admittedly, it’s a fourth Toy Story picture that we’re very, very unlikely to see any time soon.

The scoop report on Allen’s contract at The Wrap leaves more questions than answers. Here are the top five things I want to know:

Is this just a sequel clause in a contract he signed some time ago?

That’s my hunch but, for some reason, they don’t actually confirm this. I guess that’s less hit-grabbing?

Who else has such a contract?

I’m assuming Tom Hanks would, at the very least, but what if he doesn’t? What if Disney/Pixar’s plan is for a Buzz Lightyear spin-off? They tried before and, well, pretty much failed. I can’t help wondering if there’s not a direct-to-video Buzz movie being planned somewhere, particularly after yesterday’s surprise news about the Cars tie-in, Planes.

Is this contract going to run out at some point?

Because if it is, the internal pressure to make another movie will only increase and increase as time goes on. You wouldn’t want to lose your Buzz or see your Woody drop away just because you’ve been sitting on your hands. So to speak.

What does Disney Pixar’s official statement really mean?

They said “At this time, we have nothing to announce regarding another full-length feature”. Just hedging their bets? PR speak? Or do they want us to be prepared, on some level, for an announcement at some point in the future?

What have the upcoming Toy Story shorts got to do with any of this?

We don’t know what the contractual position is regarding the series of Toy Story shorts we’ve been promised. All we know about that is that the first is going to play before Cars 2 in the summer, and that there’s at least seven of these toons on the cards. And why Toy Story shorts? Just because thats what they wanted to do? Because they know we want them to do this? Or to keep the characters alive long enough that by the time Toy Story 4 is announced, we’re virtually begging for it?
