Pixar Planning Direct-to-Disc Movie Called Planes, A Spin-Off From Cars

Toy Story 2 was famously intended as a direct-to-home-video movie, promoted to a big screen release when it started shaping up as something truly, extraordinarily special. That’s proven to be a regularly recounted verse of the studio’s history, and most of the time, it’s put forward as though the very notion of movie that bypasses cinemas is disgusting.
Also frequently held up with disdain is Pixar’s recent foray into regular sequelizing. There’s a second Monsters Inc. somewhere down the line and, first of all, a Cars 2 coming next summer. The Cars movie in particular has received undue and premature criticism because of two things we know about the first installment: it’s the least loved picture in the Pixar pantheon; and it made them an absolute mint in merchandising and licensing monies.
Haters, adopt the brace position. Movieline have the scoop that one of Pixar’s upcoming projects is not only another sequel, it’s another Cars sequel and, best of all, it’s being designed for release directly to disc.
The film is being called Planes. Even if you have minimal imagination you’ll be able to work out what the gist is there as you thump the words SELL OUT into the comments section of this post.
I’d imagine that Pixar Canada are going to be set to work on this new movie, and that the budget will be significantly lower than for a theatrical release. Very well, then, that good ideas are free.
Myself, I’m looking forward to Planes. I’ve a hunch we’ll be seeing it late next year, right around the home-video release of Cars 2 so more details should be forthcoming before too long.
