Tekken Vs. King of Fighters, Poster Vs. Trailer

What the world needs now is a new videogame movie like I need a roundhouse kick to the face. All the same, here come two – and two very similarly themed ones at that.

We’ll start with the poster for the upcoming Tekken movie, which is based upon the Namco beat ‘em up. There was an international onesheet doing the rounds a few weeks back but this, I’m told, is the US design – though I’m sceptical. Look at the release date: Thursday 29th of July.

Tekken‘s director is Dwight H. Little, previously complicit in the unleashing of Anacondas: Hunt For The Blood Orchid and Free Willy 2. He’s also been the director of quite a lot of geek-friendly TV – Dollhouse, The X-Files, Prison Break.

Here’s the film’s plot summary from IMDB:

A Young Man Who seeks revenge of his mothers death. He finds his grand-father, Heihachi Mishima, and pleas to be trained. When the Mishima leader announces a “King of Iron Fist” tournament. He finds out that his mother’s killer, OGRE, will be participating in the tournament. He must fight against the worlds top competitors to achieve his goal with no interference.

Next up, here’s the trailer for the King of Fighters movie, which is based upon the SNK beat ‘em up.

The film’s director is Gordon Chan. He made a film in 2005 called Kung Fu Master (not based on the video game) and another in 2000 called 2000AD (not based on the comic book). Chan apparently also did some uncredited writing on John Woo’s Hard Boiled and uncredited directing on the Stephen Chow Royal Tramp movies, so he should have some cred with even casual followers of Chinese and Hong Kong genre cinema.

There’s no plot summary for King of Fighters on IMDB, so let’s just go with…

…because, come on, how different can it possibly be?
