Dreamworks Have Button Man Movie On To Do List

John Wagner and Arthur Ranson’s Button Man strips were first published in 2000AD before becoming some of the House of Tharg’s best selling collected series books. Inevitably, the strip was optioned for movie adaptation and, before long, Dreamworks set about developing the picture.

This was back in 2006 when Wagner was hot in Hollywood off of the success of A History of Violence. Indeed, it was that film’s producers who took the rights to Dreamworks and started the ball rolling on their big-screen, big-budget Button Man.

But a ball can only roll for so long. If no movie is made on an option, sooner or later the rights revert to their original holder. That’s why there’s a rush job version of Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged going before cameras right now – they literally started shooting on the very last day before the rights would slip through the producers’ fingers. And I really don’t want to remind you of the Corman quickie Fantastic Four film that you paid fifteen bucks for on ebay but turned off ten minutes in.

In the case of Button Man, Bleeding Cool were told that Dreamworks had hit the refresh button and stumped up the cash to keep a hold on it, and this week Arthur Ranson confirmed this on his blog.

I heard that Dreamworks have renewed their option on Button Man which is good news – not the best possible but good. They are still considering it, it could still happen, it is not ruled out, the possibility remains. Fingers crossed.

In all likelihood, then, they’re going to be attaching writers, a director and maybe even actors to this thing in the coming months. Stay tuned.
