Wanted’s Bekmambetov Planning US Remake of Black Lightning, And Chinese-Russian Sequel

Nightwatch director Timur Bekmambetov recently produced a super-car ‘n’ vigilante picture called Black Lightning. Unsurprisingly, he’s now announced that there’s an English language remake on the cards. More surprisingly, there’s a Chinese-Russian co-production sequel cooking too with Crouching Tiger producer Bill Kong showing interest in getting aboard. Here’s hoping the Ozzies join in for a threequel – they’re simply superb at car-driven B movies.

The first Black Lightning – or Chernaya Molniya to its friends – is coming to UK DVD and BD on September 6th, while there’s no readily obvious US release set as yet. Here’s a trailer.

Bekmambetov was speaking to Variety. Conspicuously he didn’t mention any Wanted sequel, quite against the grain of recent rumours that threatened such a film was imminent. Somehow I doubt we’ll ever see it.

Here’s Bekmambetov’s word on Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, an adaptation of the Seth Grahame-Smith bestseller that he is producing:

This will be a serious but entertaining movie that deals with the most interesting and powerful person of the 19th Century within an imaginary scenario that he was also an axe wielding vampire hunter.

He lost me at serious.
