Walter Mitty Remake Flops Into Lap of Gore Verbinski
There’s been a remake of The Secret life of Walter Mitty on the cards for a good while now. I remember when Jim Carrey was attached to star, with Steven Spielberg supposedly set to direct. When Carrey dropped out, Owen Wilson held the hot seat for a while, and then it was Mike Meyers’ turn and everything was overhauled completely to make it suit his comedy style. Just a couple of months ago, Sacha Baron Cohen was apparently being wooed for the role.

Now, the director and screenwriter have been pegged. According to Variety, Gore Verbinski has signed a deal to direct the picture and he could kick off as soon as next spring. In the mean time, Steve Conrad is working on another draft of the screenplay.
What could stall the movie this time? If they haven’t stuck with Sacha Baron Cohen, and there’s every chance they haven’t as he’s not mentioned anywhere in the new report, then the problem will be in finding the right, green-lightable star.
Maybe we live in some kind of wonderful Bizarro world and Nicolas Cage will get the part, reteaming with Verbinski and Conrad, his director and writer on The Weather Man. That’s a nice thought.
If you don’t know Mitty from James Thurber’s original short story then I should tell you that it’s the tale of a man driving his wife into town to do some shopping and visit the hair and beauty salon…. and that’s all that happens. Literally. If you don’t believe me, look it up.
