Desperately Seeking Kirby Cheque Stamp
Jim Steranko as made a wide appeal on Facebook, asking;
Everyone, would you possibly still have a copy of that stamp that Marvel used to put on the back of their checks or know anyone that might? My lawyer is working with the Kirby’s attorney. They need that stamp to see what the wording on it is. This could really help the Kirbys out. If you know anyone that might have… a copy of the early 1970′s stamp on the back of the check, have them contact me. Thanks.
The estate of Jack Kirby is currently in conflict with Disney and Marvel Comics over the ownership and profits over a number of properties that Jack co-created, from Fantastic Four to X-Men to Iron Man to Hulk.
Back in the day, a stamp would be placed on cheques made payable to freelancers – it could only be cashed with the signature and the intent was that the language of the stamp was to ensue that Marvel Comics owned the rights if that cheque was cashed.
What exactly Jack Kirby did or did not sign away has been a matter of contention for decades. And now, years after he’s death his family will have their day in court. Or in settlement.
If you have any information, post in the comments below. Jim Steranko will be reading.
