Lying In The Gutters: 31st May 2010

Lying In The Gutters: 31st May 2010Tomorrow is the first anniversary of Bleeding Cool. 52 weeks since William Christensen of Avatar Press saved me from losing the house after I lost my job as a radio advertising copywriter.

At that time I was in a bit of a flurry. Jonah at Comic Book Resources had offered to double my Lying in the Gutters rate do include a weekly interview, which wouldn't even have come close to paying just my mortgage, I was up for Head Writer at Comics Alliance which might have covered it just but nothing else and there was a UK start-up offering lots of promises but that was about all (they never even got a web site up). Then William made his play.

One year on, I'm writing Bleeding Cool half the day, writing radio advertising for Si Spurrier's brother-in-law (who discovered that connection after he'd approached me based on my advertising background and we marvelled at the coincidence) the other half of the day, permeated by looking after the kids – who made their joint debut at London MCM Expo on Saturday manning the stall.

This time last year, my head wasn't in a good place. Bleeding Cool probably helped me get it back together again. Tomorrow's anniversary day looks like it may be chock full of big stories. Right now, they seem to be mostly DC ones. They're all on on holiday so I thought I'd give them the opportunity to comment at least.

But anyway, welcome, once again to the week round up on Bleeding Cool. Thanks for sticking with me. Hope you've enjoyed the ride.

Top Ten Most Read Stories Of The Week

1. Six New Scott Pilgrim Posters

A quick trip to the London MCM Expo bore fruit with photos of these new Scott Pilgrim posters showing the seven evil exes, however poorly shot. Look for the crisp clear versions from official sites shortly I'm sure.

2. Batman Porn Parody Artwork

Okay, this was one of the sillier pieces this week, taking the very explicit back cover of the Batman Porn Parody DVD – and hiding all the naughty bits with a certain individual's head. I felt a bit guilty afterwards, a little empty and slightly used… and I haven't even seen the DVD.

3. Bizarre Breasts Get Literal

The story about how one of the more famous boob-job recipients as a result of web site donations has now become a comic book model. If the industry keeps creating more Power Girls, that's what we're going to get I guess…

4.Gene Colan – His Health, His Wealth And Exactly What Happened

An in depth and rather upsetting look at Gene Colan's recent history, exactly how he ended up hospitalised and fears over his monetary state. Aspects of the story have now been confirmed by New York legal record and by associate and friend of the family, Clifford Meth.

5. VIDEO: Batman XXX A Porn Parody – The Official Trailer

Currently in its record breaking fourth week in the Bleeding Cool Top Ten, the month-old post first showing the Batman XXX trailer.

6. Is Marvel Saying Goodbye To The $2.99 Book Forever?

As DC begin the move as well, we showed how now it was the exception at Marvel for a book to be $2.99, rather then the rule it was previously.

7. Batman XXX A Porn Parody ScreenCaps – Now Made SFW

It worked for Paul Levitz, why not let Dan DiDio, Jim Lee and Geoff Johns in on the action?

8. Official Details From The Gene Colan Case

The confirmation of the Gene Colan story, with official legal reports, that pushed this story from hearsay to reportage.

9. Swipe File Redux: That CTRL-ALT-DEL Thing

When a creator apologises for a Swipe File – and then finds he can't do right for doing wrong…

10. From Green Lantern To Green Brandon

The first report on exactly when Green Lantern would be a CGI TV series, as well as a look at the brand extensions for Green Lantern. Next, they'll be doing the same thing to Flash.
