Monday Runaround – Marvel Manga Lost In Transaction?

MarvelMangaWatch: The second volume of popular Del Ray Manga series X-Men: Misfits has been cancelled. Deb Aoki of About.com reports that at MoCCA, creator Raina Telgemeier's told a fan that the second volume had been cancelled. The tweet went out;

Save X-Men Misfits! Del Rey canceled the second (and final) installment b4 it was written!

Deb Aoki reports decent sales for the first volume. When approached, husband/collaborator Dave Roman confirmed the story saying;

Wow! News travels fast! @goraina and I super disappointed since it was written as a 2-part story and it will be unfair to readers. We only found out last week. We still don't have a lot of the details beyond it being a cost of licensing vs. profits issue. :/

Manga.com confirms that at least twenty pages of the second volume had been drawn and notes that the upcoming second volume of the Dely Rey Wolverine title by Antony Johnston and Wilson Tortosa is now also "unavailable" on Amazon.

Antony Johnston has confirmed the cancellation here, saying;

Unfortunately, the simple truth is that not enough people bought them. Despite WOLVERINE being praised by readers and selected for two library YA lists, despite MISFITS making it onto the New York Times bestseller list, and not least despite all the efforts of Del Rey themselves and our editors there, there just weren't enough readers to justify the costs. This is, sadly, more common than you might think in comics.
